MEET THE COACHES

HEAD COACH, RYAN McBRAYER

Born in Tucson in 1989, Ryan played for Sabino High School from 2003-2006. He played for 2 state championship runner up teams before going on to the University of Arizona to get his degree in history and Spanish.  Coach McBrayer is entering his 7th year as the head coach with a 46-16 record after serving the previous 3 as the defensive coordinator. He also teaches history and weight training at Sabino. Coach McBrayer has been married to his wife Victoria for 3 years and Sabino's #1 fan, their one-year-old daughter Millie, can be found running around the field or helping in the snack bar from time to time. 

VARSITY OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, SLY LEWIS 

Sly Lewis is from Tucson and graduated from Pueblo High School in 1992. He has been coaching at Sabino High School since 2003. He started as a freshman football coach and is currently the varsity offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach. Coach Sly has worked with many youth football organizations such as the Redskins, 49ers, Falcons and Cowboys. He is married to Shana Lewis  and has three children; Andres, Keanna, and Jalen.

VARSITY QUARTERBACKS COACH, COLLIN McBRAYER

Collin McBrayer is entering his seventh season coaching for the Sabino High School football team. This will be his 6th season as a Varsity assistant coach. Coach Collin's played High School football at Sabino from 2006-2009 and concluded with him starting at tight end for the 2009 Sabino state finalist team. He follows in tradition of Sabino standouts giving back to the program. Coach Collin serves as the quarterback coach for the varsity program.

VARSITY O-LINE COACH, BAHAREN PEREZ

Baharen Perez graduated from Cholla Magnet High School in 2009. He played football all four years as a member of the team’s offensive and defensive line. He started coaching at his alma mater immediately following graduation. At Cholla from 2009-2012, Coach Baha wore many different hats including  freshman defensive coordinator and Junior Varsity Head Coach.  He also had a great time as the game announcer for the Cholla Varsity football games during their 2011 and 2012 seasons. Coach Baha is now entering his 6th season as the Sabino Varsity O-Line and defensive ends coach.

VARSITY RB COACH, VERNON COOK

Vernon Cook graduated from Tucson High School, he played football for the legendary Coach Ollie Mayfield. Continuing as a middle linebacker in the United States  Army in Washington & Hawaii. He was voted Captain and Defensive MVP and assisted the Hawaii team in winning back to back championships. He had the opportunity to try out for the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Oilers. He has 13 years of pop warner and High School coaching experience. He takes great pride in teaching football fundamentals and the most gratification comes when he is able to encourage, mentor and teach young boys to become productive adult men beyond football. Coach Cook and his wife Jacquie have a son Cedric, a daughter, Crystal and granddaughter Amaya. Coach Cook is entering his 3rd season coaching the varsity running backs and defensive tackles.

VARSITY DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH, JASON WELCH

Jason Welch is coaching his 5th season at Sabino this year. He will serve as the varsity secondary coach and assistant receivers coach. Jason started playing football at the age of 6. He played his freshman year at Sabino HS before moving to Texas, where he starred as a two sport athlete. After high school, Jason went on to play basketball professionally in Germany.

VARSITY D-LINE COACH, JON JOLLS

Jon Jolls is embarking on his 9th season with Sabino Football.  He serves as assistant O-line coach/DT's for the varsity team. He also assists Coach McBrayer on everything he can't figure out technologically.  Prior to Sabino his coaching experience includes three years of freshman football and baseball at Agua Fria High School in  the  Phoenix area. Jolls played high school football at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale where he was a 2 year starter on the varsity offensive line. He will be the player caller for the Junior Varsity team.

JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH, ELI TRAINER

Graduate of the University of Arizona, Eli Trainer played high school football at Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek Arizona, graduating in 1999. After a season as a member of the Occidental College football team in Burbank California, he transferred to the UofA to pursue a dual major in Anthropology and Computer Science. Starting in 2008 and up until the end of the 2020 season, Coach Trainer was the head coach of youth football teams at the Tucson Scorpions. These teams ranged in ages from 8 all the way up to 14, and he also served as the organization's president for 3 years. This will be Coach Trainer's first year at Sabino, coaching JV quarterbacks and defensive ends. Eli is married to Holland Trainer, whose support and dedication to this sport allows him to pursue his passion. Eli and Holland have five children; Zakri, Max, Madi, Cailin, and Kalianna.

JUNIOR VARSITY O-LINE, DYLAN OPPELT

JUNIOR VARSITY D-LINE, MIKE BROWN

Michael Brown graduated  in 1988 from Chardon High School in Chardon Ohio. He played Varsity football , was an avid skier and played for the city  travel baseball team. He served in the US  Army 82nd Airborne Division immediately after high school. Upon returning from the Army he played 10 years of club level hockey and 9 years of semipro football, winning a championship in both. He started coaching youth football 10 years ago eventually  moving up to the middle school level. He has coached in Tucson for both the Scorpions 12U and Cowboys 13U. This is his third year at Sabino School.

HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER, MICHELLE GONZALEZ

Michelle Gonzalez begins her 3rd year at Sabino as the Athletic Trainer, but she has been working as a certified athletic trainer since 1994.  With a bachelor's degree from Washington State University and a master’s degree from the University of Arizona, she’s served as President of the Arizona Athletic Trainer’s Association, as a Board of Director for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainer’s Association, and currently serves as a Board of Director for the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Research and Education Foundation.  Michelle’s children, Luis and Jasmine, are both Sabercats.
